Jun 02, 2025 Estimated reading time: 2 minutes Modernizing Accessibility for a Medical Office Aging infrastructure can present safety hazards and compliance risks for healthcare facilities. At a doctor’s office, an outdated concrete stair at the rear entrance had become a liability, not just due to its deteriorating condition, but also because it no longer met current accessibility standards. Upside Innovations was contracted to remove this hazard and replace it with a modern, ADA-compliant aluminum stair system. ADA-Compliant Stair Replacement at a Medical Office Challenge: Replacing Unsafe and Non-Compliant Concrete Stairs The original structure, made of concrete, had begun to crack and shift, presenting trip hazards and making access difficult for patients and staff. The medical office needed a code-compliant, low-maintenance solution that could be installed quickly without disrupting daily operations. Solution: Aluminum Step System with ADA-Compliant Design Our team installed a prefabricated aluminum stair system designed to meet ADA, IBC, and local code requirements. Key benefits included: Durable Material: Made from 100% industrial-grade aluminum, the system resists rust, corrosion, and weather damage. Quick Installation: Modular bolt-together design allowed for clean and fast assembly—no welding, cutting, or heavy equipment required. Low Maintenance: Unlike concrete, aluminum does not require sealing or patching, ensuring long-term cost efficiency. Full ADA Compliance: Closed risers, compliant rise and run, continuous handrails, and slip-resistant treads promote safe use for all. Results: Safer Access and Long-Term Reliability The new stair system improves accessibility and reduces the liability associated with older infrastructure. Medical staff and patients now have safe, secure, and compliant access at all times. Grocery Covered Walkway – Custom Aluminum Canopy Retrofit in Old Bridge, NJ Call (513) 889-2492 ORDER NOW Silvana Gold Silvana is Upside's Marketing Analyst - qualifying leads that come through the website and assisting in marketing initiatives. With experience in copywriting and a degree in Marketing, her expertise is at work. Mar 12, 2025 Estimated reading time: 3 minutes Project Profile: Grocery Store Walkway Creating a Seamless Weather-Protection Solution for a Grocery Store Walkway A grocery store in Old Bridge, NJ, needed a durable covered walkway to protect its back ramp from the elements. The existing concrete ramp, used for deliveries and employee access, was fully exposed, making it vulnerable to rain, snow, and other environmental factors. The goal was to integrate a grocery store walkway canopy that would provide full coverage, improve safe access, and blend seamlessly with the store’s existing structure. To meet this challenge, the Upside Innovations team designed a custom aluminum walkway canopy, powder-coated in black to match the building’s framework. To accommodate the slope of the ramp, our installation team cut down canopy posts on-site. This created a tiered effect, ensuring consistent coverage across varying heights, without compromising stability or aesthetics. Custom walkway canopy retrofit – This was designed and installed by Upside for a grocery store in Old Bridge, NJ, providing weather protection for employees and deliveries. Beyond immediate functionality, we designed the grocery store covered walkway with adaptability in mind. Additional aluminum support beams were incorporated beneath the decking, allowing the grocery store to install lighting in the future without requiring major structural modifications. This flexibility ensures long-term usability, enhancing safety if nighttime operations become necessary. From start to finish, this was a true “easy button” project. Our team worked closely with the architect during the planning phase to align with the overall design. Once approved, we coordinated with the general contractor to provide professional engineering (PE) stamps and structural calculations, ensuring compliance with all necessary codes. The grocery store canopy installation was executed efficiently, minimizing disruptions to store operations while delivering a high-quality, fully integrated covered walkway system. See our walkway canopy installations 5 Essential Walkway Canopy Elements to Consider Discover various canopy designs and their features The result is a weather-resistant grocery walkway canopy that enhances both accessibility and safety for employees and deliveries. Dry Van Storage – The Ideal Trailer Access Ladder Solution Call (513) 889-2492 ORDER NOW Brittany Dozier My name is Brittany Dozier - your aluminum Access Solutions Advisor on the Commercial team. I have 2 years of experience at Upside Innovations. I specialize in access to warehouses, distribution centers and commercial buildings. With my expertise—where aluminum meets access, brilliance follows. Feb 21, 2025 Estimated reading time: 5 minutes When additional on-site storage is needed, a dry van trailer—a type of semi-trailer—often serves as a practical and secure temporary solution. Commonly used at construction sites, warehouses, and event venues, these trailers provide ample space to store equipment, tools, and supplies while keeping them easily accessible. Unlike ground-level storage containers, semi-trailers sit elevated off the ground—typically around 40 to 52 inches—making frequent access a challenge. Without a safe and efficient means of entry, climbing in and out of a trailer can pose safety risks and slow down productivity. This is where a reliable trailer access ladder, like Upside Innovations’ SemiStep, becomes essential, offering a stable and OSHA-compliant solution to ensure quick, secure access to elevated trailers. Use Semi-Trailers as the Foundation of Your Storage Strategy Many businesses already use semi-trailers for transportation purposes, renting or leasing them as needed to ship materials and products. However, semi-trailers can also serve as a cost-effective storage solution and can be found used for as low as $1,500. By parking one or more enclosed semi-trailers on-site or at a nearby location, companies can store excess inventory, equipment, or seasonal items without the expense of renting additional warehouse space or expanding facilities. This approach offers several key benefits: Large Capacity: Semi-trailers offer significantly more storage space compared to other options, making them ideal for storing large quantities of goods. Mobility: Trailers can be relocated as needed using a semi-truck, providing flexibility in managing storage locations. Accessibility: Large doors allow for easy loading and unloading, often aligning with loading docks for added convenience. Weather Protection: Properly sealed trailers protect stored items from rain, snow, and other elements. Security: Sturdy, lockable trailers help safeguard contents from theft and weather-related damage. For businesses without on-site space, semi-trailers can be parked on leased land nearby, providing an offsite “warehouse” that is both secure and cost-effective. This approach is particularly advantageous for businesses with fluctuating storage needs, as they can easily add or remove trailers to match seasonal demand or market conditions. SemiStep Trailer Access Ladder Our SemiStep is a modular, prefabricated aluminum stair system engineered to provide stable, slip-resistant access to semi-trailers. Its lightweight design and tool-free assembly make it easy to move and store, while the heavy-duty aluminum construction ensures durability and compliance with OSHA safety standards. SemiStep: Ensuring Safe and Efficient Access to Semi-Trailers While semi-trailers offer numerous benefits as storage units, accessing them can be challenging due to their elevated height. Upside Innovations’ SemiStep provides a practical solution designed specifically for trailer access. With its lightweight, portable design and OSHA-compliant features, SemiStep allows employees to safely and efficiently enter and exit trailers, reducing the risk of slips, trips, and falls. Key Features: Height Options: Designed for trailers with a 40” rise (dock height) or 48” off-ground access. Dimensions: 47-1/2” wide, with a tread depth of 9.5” and an 8” riser height, ensuring comfortable, ergonomic steps. Lightweight and Portable: Weighing only 72 lbs., the SemiStep can be easily repositioned as needed. Slip-Resistant Grip-Strut Tread: Serrated aluminum surface ensures safe footing, even in wet or icy conditions. Removable Handrails: Handrails can be detached for storage or transport. Compliance: Fully OSHA-compliant, ensuring safety in workplace environments. Easy Installation: Comes pre-assembled—no tools or professional installation required. Load Capacity: Supports up to 300 lbs. point load or 100 lbs. per square foot, accommodating heavy equipment and frequent use. Advantages of Using SemiStep for Semi-Trailer Access Safety: OSHA compliance ensures that your site meets safety regulations, reducing the risk of slips and falls. Efficiency: Quick and stable access saves time and improves workflow. Portability: Lightweight aluminum construction allows the stairs to be easily moved aside when closing trailer doors. Durability: Aluminum resists rust, warping, and rotting, ensuring long-lasting performance. Standard Trailer Step Double Top Trailer Step Trailer Step side-by-side Use Cases: More Than Just Trailer Access While the SemiStep is ideal for semi-trailer access, its modular design and portability make it suitable for various temporary access needs across different industries: 1. Semi-Trailers and Flatbed Trailers: Perfect for loading and unloading equipment, materials, or goods on job sites and warehouses. 2. Office Trailers: Provides safe entry and exit for modular and mobile office units on construction sites, remote job sites, and temporary setups. Stairs for mobile office trailers or modular offices 3. Storage Containers: Facilitates quick access to elevated storage containers, commonly used for on-site equipment and inventory storage. Upside’s Access Solutions for Cold Storage Buildings When it comes to safely accessing semi-trailers and other elevated storage units, the SemiStep trailer access ladder is the perfect combination of durability, safety, and convenience. Lightweight yet sturdy, it ensures OSHA-compliant access, improves efficiency, and enhances safety on job sites. Whether you’re unloading heavy equipment from a semi-trailer or accessing a temporary office trailer, trust SemiStep to provide secure, slip-resistant access every time. Oct 09, 2023 Estimated reading time: 3 minutes When choosing the right dock stairs for your project, it’s easy to default to what’s considered the “standard” – galvanized steel stairs. However, as Steve Harder, Project Manager at Flint Development, discovered, sometimes the standard isn’t always the best choice. Loading Dock Stair Installation at Flint Development Flint Development, a commercial real estate development firm based in Kansas City, was working on the Tucson Commerce Center project in Tucson, Arizona. The project involved three buildings, each requiring multiple stair installations. The General Contractor presented estimates for the traditional steel stairs and Upside Innovations’ Dock Step. Despite initial preconceptions that aluminum might not be as “stout” as steel, the significant cost savings offered by the Dock Step warranted consideration. The Dock Step resulted in a cost savings of $2,000 for each of the project’s 28 installations. The Cost Benefit of Loading Dock Steps Ultimately, the Dock Step won out – and for good reason. The project saved about $56,000 over traditional galvanized steel stairs, with a cost reduction of $2,000 on each of the 28 total installations. But the benefits didn’t stop at the financial savings. Loading Dock Step Installation Time Installation time was another major advantage of the Dock Step. Where a fabricator would typically take about three days to install the equivalent number of stairs, the Dock Step installation took just one day for an entire building. This was a significant time saving, especially considering that each stair unit from a fabricator would require two guys working for four hours. The Dock Step units are prefabricated and modular, meaning they bolt together in about an hour. This is in stark contrast to the traditional steel stairs, which ship loose and need to be welded on-site. Prefabricated Loading Dock Steps for Convenience But perhaps the most surprising benefit was the sturdiness of the Dock Step. Despite initial biases, Steve found the Dock Step to be much sturdier than expected. He was also impressed by the installation and finish, which he found superior to custom fabrication with exposed welds. Another key benefit of Upside’s prefabricated stairs is that parts can be replaced if a unit is damaged rather than the entire unit. This not only saves on cost but also on time, as there’s no need to wait for a whole new unit to be fabricated and shipped. Warehouse & Distribution Center Solutions The perfect lightweight, heavy-duty solution for warehouse and distribution center loading docks. Because Dock Step is prefabricated and modular, it bolts together in about an hour. Product Information In conclusion, Upside Innovations’ Dock Step proved to be a superior choice for the Tucson Commerce Center project. It offered significant cost and time savings, surprising sturdiness, and a superior finish. It’s clear that when it comes to choosing dock stairs, the Dock Step is a step above the rest.
